The Canyon Diablo meteorite impacted at Barringer Crater, Arizona and is known from fragments collected around the crater and nearby Canyon Diablo which lies about 3 to 4 miles west of the crater. The meteorite is an iron octahedrite which fell between 20,000 and 40,000 years ago.
Composed of coarse iron (IA) Octahedrite, it is 92% iron and 7% nickel.
Location : Coconino County, Arizona, about 40 miles east of Flagstaff, Arizona. Latitude 35 degrees 3 minutes North, Longitude 111 degrees 2 minutes West.
Structural Class : Coarse octahedrite, Og, Widmanstatten bandwidth 2.0 ±0.5mm.
Chemical Class : Group I, 7.1% Ni, 0.46% Co, 0.26% P, about 1% C, about 1% S, 80 ppm Ga, 320 ppm Ge, 1.9 ppm Ir.
Time of Fall : Between 20,000 and 40,000 years ago.
